Fantasy Baseball: 2 Start Pitchers: Week of 5/9

The purpose of this article is to secure quality two start pitchers for the upcoming week.  The 50% limit is based on ESPN leagues.  This article is assuming Mon – Sun week.

What I’ll try to do is identify a top 5 starters and a top 5 *possible* sleepers (< 50% owned based on ESPN)

Weekly readout of picks:

This will only include stats through Saturday (posted Sunday AM), in order to give you ample time to get your weekly lineups in.

Only keeping tabs on the sleepers…

Anibal Sanchez & Kyle McClellan faced off in a bad start for both pitchers.  I’m hoping their Sunday starts will fare better – Sanchez vs. WAS & McClellan vs. MIL.  To reiterate, I aim for 4 wins a week, and an ERA in the low 3’s.  My ERA dropped from 4.13 to 3.97, and I know it will continue to fall.  I gained 2 wins so far this week, and hope to get another 2 on Sunday.

Due to late update, Sanchez almost had a no-no for the second time this year, and he’s STILL < 50% owned!!!!

Now onto the next week….

Studs

1.  Tommy Hanson (WAS, PHI) –  Hmmm this looks familiar, he was on the list last week.  A rainout pushed his start back and now 2 starts vs. WAS/PHI @ home.  (ERA: 2.63, WHIP: 1.02)

2.  Tim Lincecum (ARI,@CHC) – Lincecum is in Cy Young form, if there wasn’t a Halladay lurking.  He’s facing two subpar teams this week. (ERA:  2.47, WHIP: 1.08)

3.  Jhoulys Chacin (NYM, SD) – Maybe a little high, but he’s also not facing too much competition: Home/Away ERA splits: 1.17/5.00, he’s at home. (ERA:  2.85, WHIP: 1.15)

4.  Max Scherzer (@TOR, KC) – If you like K’s, tune into Mad Max vs. Brandon Morrow on Monday.  There will be a lot of swings/misses.   (ERA: 3.15, WHIP: 1.38)

5.  David Price (@CLE, BAL) –  Price rebounded from a few bad starts last time out with a 10K shut out vs. Blue Jays.  He’s settling in for the long haul. (ERA: 3.26, WHIP: 1.13)

Sleepers

1.  Jake Arrieta (SEA, @TB) – Who is this guy?  He’s only 4-1.  Without the bad outing vs. Texas he is 4-0, 2.75 ERA & 1.14 WHIP. (ERA: 4.35, WHIP 1.25)

2.  Vance Worley (@FLA, @ATL) – Joe Blanton’s fill-in is making noise with his Rec Specs.  **Update- Blanton is back, may store in deep leagues, but that’s it (ERA: .75, WHIP: .83)

3.  Ervin Santana (FLA, MIL) – He’s good at home, but has had past trouble @Tex, but still a good play considering he had a no-no brewing in Bos  (ERA: 4.43, WHIP: 1.24)

4.  Carlos Zambrano (TEX, @KC) – He faces Carpenter/Lincecum this week.  I’m confident he’ll pitch well, but he could e out-dueled in each.  (ERA: 4.23, 1.19)

5.  Javier Vazquez (PHI, @WAS) – I liked him as a preseason sleeper, but have dropped him from a number of leagues.  If he doesn’t perform this week, it won’t get any better the rest of the season. (ERA: 6.39, WHIP: 1.81)
